Toonz partners with Industry veteran Bill Schultz for ‘The Skinner Boys‘; Acquires rights for Mukpuddy‘s ‘Sparkle Friends‘

Toonz CEO P. Jayakumar has announced that it will produce a new animated series with world-class creator Steve Lyons. The company has also partnered with Emmy Award-winning Animation industry veteran Bill Schultz to produce the series, as well as distribute a new slate of high quality programs to help grow its overall Kids & Family business, including distribution opportunities for its worldwide TV distribution company which is headed up by LA based, President of Distribution, Matt Cooperstein.
Also Toonz Entertainment USA, the distribution division of the Toonz Group has announced that they have signed a deal with Auckland-based cartoon studio, Mukpuddy, which give the distributor the highly sought after multi-platform distribution rights to library of cartoon short content. For the first time ever, the incredible hilariously funny ‘Sparkle Friends‘ cartoon shorts will available to the worldwide market. ‘Sparkle Friends‘ produced for New Zealand‘s long running children‘s show ‘What Now‘, stars the ‘What Now‘ presenters as kids, their pet gorilla and also a magical gunge spewing creature called Gungi. Each episode of approximately 3 min duration was telecasted in TV2 in New Zealand and the ABC in Australia.
“We are excited to have this relationship with a creator of Steve‘s caliber. The relationship with Bill on this exciting property will allow us to ramp up our content business in concert with one of the most experienced and talented Creators and Producers in the business. We have the resources and commitment and have begun what we believe will be a very fruitful relationship” stated P. Jayakumar.
“I am extremely excited to work with Jaya and the team at Toonz because they bring so much to the table. The studio‘s appetite for growth and new projects is backed up by tremendous resources, including Co-Production capability, Finance and importantly Worldwide Television Distribution. So they are ideal partners for almost anyone in the content business,” offered Schultz. “We have some amazing things in the works and are lined up for some very interesting meetings in at next month‘s MIP Market!”
The Studio will debut its pilot of “The Skinner Boys: Guardians of the Lost Secrets”, created by world class Australian animator Steve Lyons. “Steve has directed a series for Disney TV and even has his own concept under option with Steven Spielberg”, said Schultz. “But we were able to commit to Steve that we would actually make this amazing Series” The Skinner Boys is a high quality 2d animated, beautifully designed and conceived classic adventure series about three teen brothers who “inherit” the adventurous but dangerous family business from their late Grandfather Augustus Skinner and, with the reluctant blessing of their Mother, must vow to protect exotic “lost secrets” from falling into the hands of the nefarious “Shadow League”.
The 26 half hour animated skein offers a unique blend of adventure and pathos, even a few laughs in between gasps, with incredible visuals. Partners for the new show will be announced, as well as at least two other major program events, prior to the market.
On the hunt for great content to produce and distribute, Toonz signed a deal with the Mukpuddy to distribute its growing library of digital comedy shorts, making them available to broadcasters for TV, Web and Mobile. “The appealing design and strong sense of edgy comic timing make this library extremely attractive to today‘s cluttered landscape, trying to reach short attention span kids. The multi-platform DNA of these shorts creates loads of opportunities for placement,” said Matt Cooperstein, Executive VP of Toonz Entertainment.
“This deal is a great moment for us. We get emails and calls all the time from channels who want to license our stuff and the relationship with Toonz gives us the chance to finally manage this part of the business. Now we can go back to making more cartoons, which is all we really want to do”, said Mukpuddy, a trio of talented young cartoonists.
Sparkle Friends is a fast paced and clever series of cartoon comedy shorts, whose appealing and colorful graphic style stands out to an audience who are always on the lookout for something new to get behind. Whether on TV, downloaded to an iPhone or iPad, or streamed on popular broadcast websites, the library of shorts is perfectly positioned in today‘s cluttered market. The deal also creates a relationship whereby Mukpuddy can also develop some new ideas for series and shorts.
