Frying Pan – 3ds Max Modeling

In this very simple and basic 3d modeling tutorial i will show you guys how to create a frying pan in 3D Studio Max. We will use lots of 3d modeling tools such as: Chamfer, Connect, Bridge, Bavel, Inset, Ring, Loop, etc and Modifiers like Shell and Turbo Smooth. Don’t hesitate to comment if you get stuck “on the road”. So, let’s move on.
Step 1: Select the Cylinder front Geometry Panel, under Create. Make a Cylinder in the center of the grid with this settings: Radius – 40cm, Height – 10cm, Height Segments – 1, Cap Segments – 2 and Sides – 18(see the image below).
Step 2: Right click on the Cylinder and Convert it to Editable Poly.
Step 3: Press 4 on your keyboard to go to Polygon mode or simply select it from Selection drop down menu. Select all the top polygons holding down CTRL like in the image below and delete them by pressing Delete on you keyboard.
Step 4: Select your bottom polygons and using Select and Uniform Scale tool scale them down a little.
Step 5: Press 6 on your keyboard to exit selection mode and from the Modifier List apply a Shell Modifier with an Inner Amount of 1.3cm.
Step 6: Right click on your object and, again, convert it to Editable Poly.
Step 7: In Polygon Selection select the new top create polygons one by one holding down Ctrl, or in Edge Selection mode select one edge press Ring to make a ring selection, hold down CTRL and in Selection Menu click on Polygon to convert your selection. Make the polygons Planar on Z axis.
Step 8: In Edge selection mode(2 on your keyboard) select one side edge and press Ring to make a ring selection.
Step 9: Press the Connect Button, connect one edge and Slide it 50 units.
Step 10: In Polygon selection mode select two polygons like in the image below:
Step 11: Extrude them by pressing the Extrude button with the following settings: Group and 80cm amount.
Step 12: In front view using Select and Move tool move the Polygons up in the Y axis direction as you see in the next image:
Step 13: Press 2 on your keyboard to go to Edge Selection mode and select the edges like in the image below:
Step 14: Press Connect Button and connect the edges with 1 Segment. Click on X next to the Make Planar button to make the edges planar in the X axis direction.
Step 15: Again select the edges like in the below image:
Step 16: Connect them with 3 Segments using the Connect Button.
Step 17: Go in Vertex selection mode(press 1 on your keyboard) and in Top view select the vertices from the left as you can see in the next image:
Step 18: Now using the Select and Uniform Scale tool scale down the vertices on the Y axis until you have a nice shape for the frying pan handle. After scaling down once deselect the vertices form the right side and scale down again.
Step 19: In Edge selection mode select the edges like in the below image:
Step 20: Using Connect button connect the edges with 1 Segment. Move the vertices to create a nice shape(see image).
Step 21: In Polygon Selection mode select 4 polygons as you can see in the below image:
Step 22: Inset the Polygons with 2.0cm and Delete them by pressing Delete on your keyboard.
Step 23: In Border Selection mode(3 on your keyboard) select the 2 borders resulted from deleting the polygons and press on Bridge to make a connection between them.
Step 24: Select those 2 edges you see i have selected in the image bellow and press on Ring to make a ring selection.
Step 25: Connect the edges with 2 Segments and a Pinch of 50 units.
Step 26: Select one top edge and make a ring selection by clicking on Ring like you can see in below image:
Step 27: Again, connect the edges with 2 Segments and 50 Pinch.
Step 28: Select the 2 edges you see selected in the below image and make a loop selection by clicking on the Loop button.
Step 29: Click on Chamfer button and chamfer the edges with 2.0cm amount and 2 Segments.
Step 30: Select on edge and make a ring selection like you see in the next image:
Step 31: Connect the edges with 1 Segments and Slide of 60.
Step 32: Now to add some detail to our Frying Pan select the top 4 polygons you see selected below:
Step 33: Inset them with an amount of 2.0cm.
Step 34: Now Bevel the polygons using the Bevel button with the following settings: Type – Group, Height – “-1″ and Outline – “-1″.
Step 35: In Edge Selection mode select the edges you see selected bellow:
Step 36: Chamfer the edges with 0.2cm and 1 Segment.
Step 37: For the Final step just add a TurboSmooth Modifier from the Modifier list and set the Iterations to 2 and we are done with this 3d modeling lesson. Good job!
